OBSTACLE EVALUATION
Overview
The Flight Procedures Section of the Aeronautical Information Services Department has the infrastructure, equipment and expertise to provide an Aeronautical Air Traffic Management and Communication, Navigation and Surveillance system evaluation service. This service is conducted in accordance to ICAO Standards and recommended Practices (SARP’s), taking in consideration customer requirements.
Abilities
Evaluations of proposed or existing structures and developments are conducted in terms of:
- Protection of navigational aids (i.e. Radar, ILS, VOR, Communications etc.) This will include the impact on the signal in space.
- ICAO Obstacle free surfaces.
- All Instrument Approach Procedures.
Aeronautical Software Developments’ PDToolkit software is utilised for the aeronautical evaluation, and system specific engineering software is used to conduct RADAR, communication and navigation system impact studies. In addition to topographical data, WGS-84 survey data (airport and obstacle), AIP, AIP supplement and NOTAM data is incorporated into the evaluation.
All the processes are quality controlled to ensure flight safety, and quality assured in accordance with ISO 9001 standards.
Achievements
The Flight Procedures Section of the Aeronautical Information Services Department has been conducting aeronautical evaluations for South Africa and for South African clients since the inception of ATNS in 1994. Some of these clients include:

Furthermore, some aeronautical evaluations have been done for clients external to South Africa on a contractual basis. Some of these clients include:

- Swaziland
- United Nations
